Pips Game

Pips

A tray of dominoes and a board marked into regions. Every region tells you something about the dominoes inside it, and only one arrangement satisfies all of them.

Three puzzles a day, one easy, one medium and one hard, and every one has exactly one solution.

How to play Pips

Drag a domino from the tray onto the board. It covers two squares, and a click or tap turns it ninety degrees before you place it.

Each region carries a rule. A number means the pips inside have to add up to it, an equals sign means every square holds the same value, and the crossed circle means they all have to be different.

Empty regions have no rule at all, so they are the safe places to park a domino you are not sure about.

Double click a placed domino to send it back to the tray, or use Undo. The puzzle is solved when every square is covered and every region is happy.

Frequently asked questions

What do the symbols on a region mean?

A number is a total the pips in that region must add up to. An equals sign means all the squares in the region hold the same number of pips. The crossed circle means they must all be different.

Does every puzzle have one answer?

Yes. Each puzzle is checked for a single solution before it is published, so if you can place everything legally, you have found the answer.

What is the difference between the difficulties?

Harder puzzles use bigger boards, more regions with rules, and fewer places where a domino obviously fits. Easy puzzles usually fall out from one or two forced placements.

Can I come back to a puzzle later?

Yes. Your board is saved as you play, and the calendar button opens any earlier day's puzzles.

About Pips

Pips is a domino logic puzzle, closer to Sudoku than to a game of dominoes. You never draw tiles and nothing is random once the board is dealt: everything you need is printed on the regions.

The way in is usually a small region with a tight rule. A region of two squares that has to total three can only be one and two, and that pins down a domino, which pins down its neighbour.

Puzzles are generated fresh each day and verified for a unique solution, so there is never a guess that you were supposed to take.
