How to Play Mini Chess
Mini Chess is chess on a small board. Every piece moves as it always does and checkmate still ends the game, but with far fewer squares the fight starts on move one.
It is a good way to practise tactics without committing half an hour to a full game.
Play Mini ChessWhat changes on a small board
- Development is instant. There is no slow opening, so a loose piece is punished immediately.
- The king is never far from the action, which makes king safety a concern from the start.
- Pawns reach promotion quickly, so a passed pawn is a genuine threat rather than an endgame plan.
- Trades matter more. Losing a single piece on a small board is close to losing the game.
Tactics to look for
Forks are everywhere. With pieces packed together a knight often hits two things at once, so check every knight move before you commit.
Count defenders before you capture. Material swings decide these games faster than position does.
Frequently asked questions
Are the rules the same as chess?
Yes. The pieces move identically and checkmate ends the game. Only the board size changes.
How long does a game take?
A few minutes, which is the point of it.
