How to Play 2048
2048 is a sliding number puzzle. Every move pushes every tile on the board in one direction, and two tiles with the same number merge into their double. Start with a pair of twos and keep merging until a 2048 tile appears.
The game is easy to learn and hard to control, because every move you make also adds a new tile to the board.
Play 2048How to play
- Swipe or press an arrow key to slide every tile as far as it will go in that direction.
- Tiles with the same number merge when they collide, so two 4s become an 8.
- After every move a new 2 or 4 appears in a random empty square.
- You lose when the board is full and no neighbouring tiles match, so keeping empty squares is as important as merging.
The strategy that works
Pick a corner and never let your biggest tile leave it. Most players use the bottom left. Build your largest numbers along that bottom row in descending order so they can merge into each other in sequence.
Use only three directions. If your big tile sits in the bottom left, press left, down and right, and treat up as an emergency move only. One careless up press drags the big tile out of the corner and the board falls apart.
Merge small tiles early rather than leaving sixteens and thirty twos scattered around. Free space is what keeps you alive.
Frequently asked questions
What is the highest tile possible in 2048?
In theory 131072, though reaching 4096 already means an almost perfect game. Most players are happy to see 2048 itself.
Is 2048 luck or skill?
Both, but mostly skill. New tiles appear at random, yet a player who keeps the biggest tile cornered will beat a random player every time.
Why do I keep losing at the end?
Usually because a large tile drifted into the middle. Once your big numbers are surrounded by small ones they cannot merge, and the board fills up.
