Daily puzzle games to add to your morning routine

The appeal of a daily puzzle is that it ends. There is one, everybody gets the same one, and when it is done you are released back into your morning.

These all work that way. Each has a puzzle per day, a number you can share, and an archive you can dip back into when you want more than one.

Wordle, for four minutes

One five letter word, six guesses, colour feedback. It is the shortest commitment here and the easiest to talk about with somebody else, because you both had the same word.

Pips, for ten

A board of shaded regions and a tray of dominoes that covers it exactly. Each region wants a sum, an inequality, all equal or all different, and the whole thing has exactly one answer.

There are three a day, easy, medium and hard, so it scales to how much morning you have left.

Sudoku, for as long as you like

A new grid each day on three levels. The hard one is a genuine sitting; the easy one is a warm up.

Killer Sudoku runs on the same daily schedule if you want cages and sums instead of givens.

Boggle, for however long you keep finding words

Everyone gets the same board, so this is the one to compare. The progress bar shows how much of the board you have found, which is either motivating or upsetting depending on the morning.

How the dailies work here

  • The puzzle comes from the date, worked out on your device, so it loads with no waiting.
  • Every puzzle has an ID, and an ID is just another name for a date, so you can share one or go back to an old one.
  • Progress is saved per puzzle, so a half finished grid is still there tomorrow.
  • New Game never deals you a puzzle you have already finished.

Three of these take under fifteen minutes between them, which is about one commute.
